How to lower your credit card interest
Call your card company, using the number on the back of the card, and ask for a lower interest rate. Say something like: "I always pay on time and I'm carrying a balance. Could you lower my interest rate?" Ask for a lower APR and a temporary hardship programme if money is tight.
Who to ask for
Ask for customer service using the number on the back of your card.
Before you call
- Know your current APR and balance.
- Note your payment history. Paying on time helps your case.
- Look at balance transfer offers from other cards, and their transfer fees.
What to say to your provider
Hi, I've been a customer for [years] and I always pay on time.
My APR is [rate] and I'm carrying a balance. Could you lower my interest rate?
I have other offers with lower rates. If you can't help, I'm considering moving the balance.
Fill in the parts in square brackets with your own numbers before you call.
Offers to ask for
- A lower APR
- A temporary hardship programme if money is tight
- Waiving or reducing the annual fee, or moving you to a no-fee card
- Waiving a late fee if it was a one-off
If they say no
- Ask politely to be transferred to the retention or loyalty team. Saying "cancel" at the phone menu usually gets you there.
- Ask them to note the account and escalate to a supervisor.
- If it's still no, thank them, end the call and try again another day. Different agents can offer different deals.
- Be ready to actually switch. The best offers often come after you book a cancellation.
Best time to call
Call about 30 days before a promotion or renewal ends, on a weekday morning when queues are shorter. Have your account number, PIN and latest bill to hand.
Confirm the deal in writing
After the call, send this by chat or email:
Hi, confirming what we agreed today, [date]: my new price is [amount] a month for [months] months, starting on my next bill, with [changes]. The agent was [name or ID]. Please reply to confirm. Thank you.
When to switch
A balance transfer can help if you can pay the balance off before the promo rate ends. Check the transfer fee, and remember new purchases on that card may not get the promo rate.
